The Heartwarming Journey of Girls’ Basketball in Vernon; The Rise of ACE Hoops

Girls Basketball In VernonIn the town of Vernon, a heartwarming story unfolds, revolving around the transformative power of basketball in the lives of young girls. At the center of this tale is a devoted basketball enthusiast and father, who has ignited a passion for the sport in his three daughters and, by extension, their community.

The eldest daughter, a 10th grader, shines on the Seaton Varsity Basketball team, having recently received the prestigious Okanagan Valleys AAA Championship All-Star Award. Her success on the court has become a beacon of inspiration for her younger siblings, Ava, 12, and Kara, 9, who have eagerly followed in her footsteps, embracing the game with open arms.

Basketball, in this family’s journey, is more than just a sport; it’s a vehicle for teaching invaluable life skills. The father, drawing from his own love for the game, has skillfully used basketball to instill confidence in his daughters. His philosophy is simple yet profound: use sports as a platform to encourage focus, self-improvement, and resilience, especially important for young girls navigating their formative years.

Aleeya, the eldest daughter, has experienced her fair share of challenges and triumphs. Her parents have been her steadfast support system, offering encouragement during tough times and stepping back when needed, allowing her to independently navigate her path. This balanced approach has helped Aleeya emerge stronger from setbacks and more motivated by her victories.

The journey doesn’t stop with Aleeya. Ava and Kara are keenly following in their sister’s footsteps, not only learning the game but also absorbing the life lessons it imparts. Their father, a well-known figure in the community through his restaurant, The Rice Box, recognized the need for early engagement in basketball. He envisioned a club that would offer his daughters and their peers an early start in the sport, breaking the conventional wait until 6th grade to play organized basketball.

Thus, the Vernon Lynx basketball team was born in March 2023, starting with a group of 12 enthusiastic players. Despite initial challenges and defeats, the team’s spirit remained unbroken. The girls learned to view each loss as a lesson and each win as an opportunity to identify areas for improvement. This resilient mindset was fostered by their coach’s philosophy: focus on learning and enjoyment over winning, and success will follow.

Most of the team members, now deeply in love with the game, often head to the Dogwood Gym after school to hone their skills independently. This self-motivated practice speaks volumes about the positive impact of the basketball program on their lives.

Encouraged by the transformative effect of basketball on his daughters and their peers, the father expanded the program to cater to a broader age range, responding to the growing demand from other parents. His vision for girls’ basketball in Vernon is becoming a reality, creating a nurturing environment for young athletes to thrive.

With a rich background in basketball, both as a player and a coach, the father brings a wealth of experience to the table. Despite being relatively new to coaching, his dedication to professional development and his unique coaching strategies are making a significant difference. He’s not only coaching teams but also offering personal training sessions and planning to launch a basketball academy and camps.

As the Vernon Lynx, now known ACE Hoops, as it embarks on its second year, the future is bright. The foundation laid by a dedicated father, his daughters, and the supportive community of Vernon is a testament to the power of sports in shaping young lives. This heartwarming journey of girls’ basketball in Vernon is just the beginning of a broader movement towards empowerment, resilience, and the joy of the game
